BBQ’s Same-Store Performance Declines as Discretionary Dining Moderates

Barbeque Nation’s SSSG has stayed negative for most quarters, underscoring soft discretionary demand and limited unit-level momentum despite ongoing store expansion.

Table of Contents

Barbeque Nation’s same-store sales growth has remained consistently negative across the past seven quarters, with declines ranging from –2% to –7.4%. The only exception was a modest +1.4% in Q4FY24, driven by a favourable base and seasonal dining uplift. Subsequent quarters reverted to negative territory, reflecting muted discretionary spending, slower weekday footfalls, and broader softness in the casual dining category. The persistent weakness limits operating leverage and constrains revenue-per-restaurant performance, even as the store base continues to expand.

What It Means

The sustained negative SSSG trend highlights structural demand softness and intensifying competition in the casual dining segment. While Barbeque Nation continues to grow its footprint, unit-level momentum remains weak. A turnaround will require sharper value positioning, stronger weekday traffic drivers, and targeted menu innovations to revive on-premise demand.
